ACTA AGM – April 18th

Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA) Annual General Meeting

ACTA is holding its annual general meeting on Thursday 18 April, 7pm AEDT.  Please contact the ACTA secretary if you wish to participate. Secretary@tesol.org.au

ACTA is the national coordinating body for all associations of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) across Australia. Membership of ACTA comes automatically through membership of one of its constituent associations.

All members of TESOL associations are welcome to attend the AGM.

ACTA is made up of councillors from each state and territory association. Councillors, need to be nominated by state and territory TESOL associations. Only TESOL association councillors or their designated proxies are entitled to vote at the AGM.

ACTA Objectives

  • to represent and support the interests of teachers of English to speakers of other languages and dialects and their students
  • to ensure access to appropriate English language instruction for speakers of other languages and dialects
  • to encourage implementation and delivery of quality professional programs at all levels
  • to promote study, research and development of TESOL at local, regional, national and international levels.

ACTA Conference Scholarships for WATESOL members

WATESOL full members are invited to apply for a scholarship to attend the 2018 ACTA Conference in Adelaide, this October. The scholarship, valued at$830, will cover the cost of a full registration, pre-conference workshop and the networking dinner. To apply for this, simply email president@watesol.org.au  explaining how you will use your experience at the Conference to benefit WATESOL members (maximum one A4 page) by May 30th.

Secondary EaL/D Moderation Meeting – Wednesday 16 May 2018 4.00pm-6.00pm, Aranmore Catholic College

WATESOL will be providing an opportunity for Year 11 and 12 ATAR EAL/D teachers and those preparing for Year 11 ATAR EAL/D,  to moderate synthesis assessments in order to gain more confidence in making consistent judgements. Teachers are encouraged to bring along work samples to use on the day. Please register your interest on the link below.



Translanguaging: Recognising, valuing and celebrating Aboriginal students’ language backgrounds in teaching and learning – Curtin University Conference 18 and 19 May

Moving between languages strategically and creatively is what happens when students ‘translanguage’.

This conference will support you to add translanguaging to your repertoire of good language teaching skills so as to improve the active uptake by Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal bilingual, bidialectal and multilingual students of the Western Australian Curriculum.

If you have a passion for making your classroom more inclusive of Aboriginal students and students of all cultures, this conference is for you.

This conference is especially relevant to:

  • English teachers
  • EAL/D Teachers
  • Language Teachers (all languages)
  • Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander Education Officers
  • Education Assistants
  • School Leaders
  • Literacy Coordinators

This workshop is offered by the Curtin University School of Education Learning Hub.  It will be jointly delivered by researchers and educators with a passion in linguistics and education.

MLTWA Conference Call For Papers

Call for Papers – 2018 MLTAWA Biennial State Conference: ‘Making Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) Work in the Classroom’. To be held Friday 20 and Saturday 21 July 2018 at Curtin University. Perth.

Confirmed Keynote Speakers: Professor Rod Ellis, Dr Lindy Norris, Associate Professor Paul Toth, Associate Professor Craig Lambert and Professor Krishna Sen will present the Nick Norris Memorial Lecture on leadership in Languages.
