 ’s Four Strands\, 25% of learning should be focused on fluency developme
 nt\, that is the learner using the language she already has to make meanin
 g. Hence\, in this workshop\, we will be looking at the theory and practic
 e of fluency development and I will highlight fluency activities at elemen
 tary to advanced levels that are relevant\, achievable\, and perhaps a bit
  of ‘fun’. No language deficit here. It’s all about using the langua
 ge the learner already has at her disposal to have a conversation\, listen
  to and tell a story\, explain a situation\, and read and write without a 
 teacher. Classroom research recently completed on fluency writing will be 
 highlighted.\n\nKaren Slikas Barber is an Advanced Skills Lecturer in the 
 Adult Migrant English Program at North Metropolitan TAFE in Perth\, Wester
 n Australia. Her areas of interest include adult literacy and preliteracy\
 , materials development\, specialist English courses\, and classroom-based
  research as published in TESOL in Context. She writes and publishes langu
 age learner literature including the ‘Carly and Kumar: Easy-to-read shor
 t stories’ series. She has a Master of Education in TESOL\, a Bachelor o
 f Science in Civil Engineering\, and Diploma in Modern Languages: German a
 nd is presently studying Spanish.'\n\nRoom E323 at North Metro TAFE\, Aber
