DESCRIPTION:This session is one of a suite of stand alone resources develop
 ed to support teachers to: ‘Focus age-appropriate instruction for studen
 ts on phonemic awareness\, phonics\, fluency\, vocabulary and comprehensio
 n.’ Focus 2015. Students learn best when teachers adopt a skillfully int
 egrated approach to explicit reading instruction that incorporates these f
 ive essential elements. This workshop explores the place of vocabulary ins
 truction in the Western Australian Curriculum: English.\n\nParticipants co
 nsider how to:\n• select words for explicit instruction\n• the place o
 f dictionaries\n• what an effective teaching sequence looks like\nPartic
 ipants are shown how to:\n• explicitly teach vocabulary in the classroom
 \n• increase a word conscious approach across all learning areas\n\nPlea
 se bring along a dictionary typically used in a classroom and a\nbilingual
  dictionary if you have one.
