Advocacy

Advocacy for the interests of teachers of English as a second language

Within Western Australia, and nationally (through ACTA, the Australian Council of TESOL Associations), advocacy is a key WATESOL focus. The committee responds to concerns raised by members and contributes expertise as required.

If you are concerned about an issue and would like WATESOL to advocate for change, please contact us so  we can hear your concerns.

IEC and EALD Funding in WA

In late March 2023, on behalf of members, WATESOL wrote a letter to Hon Dr Minister of Education, Dr Tony Buti, raising concerns regarding waning commitment to the roles of Intensive English Centres in some schools in the context of Independent Public Schools as well as a concern re funding for EAL/D students.

You can read his reply below, which didn’t satisfactorily address our concerns. The committee is considering its next move.
