Unsettling the norms: Feminist dialogic approaches to professional learning and research in TESOL
Helene Markmann (North Metropolitan TAFE), Elizabeth Bennett (North Metropolitan TAFE), Maggie McAlinden (Edith Cowan University), Toni Dobinson (Curtin University)
TESOL teachers and academics usually work in contexts that are often far removed from each other. Moreover, the prevalence of traditional hierarchies and asymmetrical power relations in Academia and Education often reinforce the differences between teaching and research. In 2023, TAFE lecturers Elizabeth Bennett and Helen Markmann embarked on a short internship with Maggie McAlinden at Edith Cowan University. The internship was part of a TAFE program which supports TAFE Lecturers to engage in professional learning.
One outcome of the internship was a short literature review and survey about Trawsieithu (Williams, 1994); better known in English as Translanguaging. Another was the beginnings of a collaborative research project to explore new ways that TESOL teachers and researchers in Western Australia can learn from and with each other.
To begin our dialogue (Bhaktin, 1981), Helene, Elizabeth, and Maggie reflect on their experience and the value of collaboration. In the second part, we will think and learn together in dialogue with Toni Dobinson to explore some of the questions about Translanguaging that have arisen from the project.
This will be a reflective, dialogic presentation in which the audience are invited to join the conversation.
