According to Paul Nation’s Four Strands, 25% of learning should be focused on fluency development, that is the learner using the language she already has to make meaning. Hence, in this workshop, we will be looking at the theory and practice of fluency development and I will highlight fluency activities at elementary to advanced levels that are relevant, achievable, and perhaps a bit of ‘fun’. No language deficit here. It’s all about using the language the learner already has at her disposal to have a conversation, listen to and tell a story, explain a situation, and read and write without a teacher. Classroom research recently completed on fluency writing will be highlighted.
