This presentation explores practical strategies for providing written corrective feedback (WCF) on linguistic errors that empower learners rather than discourage them. Drawing on findings from her PhD research, together with classroom experience and theoretical knowledge, Waruni Iresha Ekanayaka will discuss how feedback can move beyond simply ‘fixing mistakes’ to fostering confident, independent writers in EAL/D classrooms. She will present a strategic approach to WCF, focusing on practical techniques that address diverse learner needs and different stages of writing development.

She will address the key questions of WCF:

  1. What it is and why it matters
  2. How it works
  3. How much and when to give feedback
  4. What comes next for WCF to be truly effective

Waruni Iresha Ekanayaka is a teacher at Cyril Jackson Senior Campus with extensive experience in language education. Prior to this, she worked as a lecturer at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Sri Lanka. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Linguistics, a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics, and a PhD from Curtin University, where she was awarded the Walter de Neal Award for Excellence in Educational Research (2023). Her doctoral research examined the efficacy of teachers’ direct and semi-focused written corrective feedback on learners’ linguistic accuracy and writing fluency. She has published several works in the field of WCF, and her research interests include written corrective feedback, code-switching, and task-based language teaching.
